National Service Scheme (N.S.S.)

The N.S.S. remains to be an extension programme of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University. It was started in 1989 with its First Programme Officer Mr. Jaiminee Kadoo. After him Dr. Chetan Masram took over the charge. He served this unit upto June 2011. From 2011 onwards Dr. J. A. Janbandhu, Associate Professor and Head, Department of English took over the charge. For the smooth functioning of the unit Mr. Jaiminee Kadoo, Department of Marathi assisted in almost every activity as Co-Programme officer until his retirement in 2012. Ms. Shamali Khalatkar, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Botany worked as the NSS Programme Officer for 2019-20 and then Dr. Eknath Raut, Associate Professor, Library and Information Centre took the charge in 2020. At present, Mr. Prashant Nimje, Assistant Professor, P. G. Department of Mathematics is working as the NSS Programme Officer and heading the NSS unit.

Activities by NSS:-

Activities during the pandemic and vaccination drives

NSS has basically two types of activities viz.

  • Regular Activities
  • Special Village Camp

 Regular Activities comprise:

  • Campus Cleanliness Drive
  • Tree Plantation and Blood Donation Camp
  • AIDS Awareness Programme
  • Street Play on Alcoholism, Corruption, Unemployment, Plastic Ban etc.
  • Rallies on various themes. (Voters’ Awareness, Superstition, Digital Transaction)
  • Shramdaan

For Special Village camp, a specific village where many problems exist, is selected. The NSS Volunteers are taken to the village to be resided for a week or so and the task they take during the camp are:

  • Interaction session with villagers
  • Cleanliness Drive
  • Street Play on Superstition, Illiteracy, Anti-Narcotism etc
  • Free Medical Camp for villagers
  • Blood Donation Camp
  • Tree Plantation
  • Cultural Programmes
  • Orientation Programmes by Guest Speaker
  • Interaction with Village Panchayat and Primary School Teachers

Activities during COVID pandemic

The NSS unit members and student volunteers under the strict supervision of doctors and following all the regulations of the Government performed following activities during the COVID pandemic.

  • On 6 June 2020, face masks, homeopathic medicine Arsenicum album 30 and non-perishable food materials were distributed near the college. Around150 needy, homeless and underprivileged members of the society around the college were benefited from this activity.

  • Keeping in view the shortage of blood and its components faced by hospitals, a blood donation camp was organized on 10 June 2020. This camp was organized in association with Prabhatai Ojha Smruti Seva Sanstha, Nagpur.
  • On 29 June 2020, the NSS unit distributed reusable face masks and homeopathic medicine Arsenicum album 30 at Solanki Patil Wadi, a slum area. More than 250 citizens from the slums were benefitted from the activity.

  • Participation in Regular NSS Programme (Min. 120 hours) – 3 marks
  • Participation in NSS Special Camp (College Level) – 3 Marks
  • Participation in University/State/National Level Camp – 4 Marks
